Focusrite OctoPre MkII Dynamic Microphone Pre Amp

Focusrite OctoPre MkII Dynamic Microphone Pre Amp Review

Focusrite OctoPre MkII Dynamic Microphone Pre Amp Feature

  • Eight award-winning Focusrite pre-amps
  • Built-in eight single-dial Focurite Red 3 derived Compressors
  • Focusrite's unique More switch doubles the ratio to deliver 'compression with effect'
  • Built-in eight channel 24-bit / 96 kHz digital outputs (ADAT)
  • State-of-the-art Clocking Solutions - Word Clock out and advanced JetPLL jitter elimination
With eight channels of Focusrite microphone pre-amplification, eight VCA-based Red 3-derived compressors and built-in 24-bit / 96 kHz digital inputs and outputs, OctoPre MkII Dynamic is Focusrite’s feature-rich expansion upgrade for any digital audio workstation, analog or digital console, or hard disk recorder. Digital inputs and outputs let you make the most of often-neglected ADAT i/o; ideal for expanding the number of mic-pre inputs on your interface or for providing analogue monitoring from any digital ADAT feed. With this entire package fitting into a single 1U chassis complementing Focusrite’s Saffire PRO range, and all controls adjustable from the front fascia, OctoPre MkII Dynamic sets the standard for modern, compact, multi-channel recording expansions. The Compressors featured in OctoPre MkII Dynamic are a new VCA-based, feed-forward design, derived from the celebrated Focusrite Red 3. With just a single dial, these eight 'recording' compressors allow you to get to the desired amount of compression for each channel, fast, providing a natural but loud sound. The single dial solution decreases the threshold and increases the makeup gain simultaneously, the result of which is a sound that gets progressively more compressed but retains a good output level. The compressors uses a soft-knee progressive compression curve, modeled on the properties of the Red 3 compressor, and featuring a fixed Attack time of 1.2 ms and Release time of 28ms. The circuit has been tuned by ear at Focusrite and these settings were chosen after critical listening and analysis of the Red 3. The compressor has two modes: Normal and ‘More’, which let you change the behavior of the compressor to suit different instruments. With the OctoPre MkII Dynamic’s 'More' button found on each compressor, you can bring a bit of aggression to your sound. Focusrite has, over the past two decades, built a reputation as the market leader for high quality recording equipment.

With the new FireControl Mixer/Router you can send up to five individual mixes to different musicians during recording so that every band member can have a custom headphone mix.

The FireStudio Project can be daisy-chained with one or more FireStudio Projects or FireStudio Tubes to expand your number of recording inputs. Two and three units daisy-chained in any combination has been tested at PreSonus, however, the total number of units that can be daisy-chained depends on your computer’s processor speed, amount of RAM and computer configuration.

The FireStudio Project is the next-generation of the award-winning FP10/FirePod with the following improvements:

  • Improved analog to digital converters (114dB dynamic range)
  • Improved syncronization with JetPLL™ (jitter elimination technology)
  • FireControl Mixer/Router to send up to five separate zero-latency stereo mixes to musicians during recording
  • Three-segment LED input metering on all analog channels
  • Internal IEC-based power supply
  • PreSonus Studio One Artist bundle with Native Effects plug-ins and third-party instruments, loops, and applications.

8 XMAX Class A Preamplifiers

The FireStudio Project includes eight custom-designed high-voltage, discrete, XMAX Class A microphone preamplifiers for all types of microphones. Many other companies offering recording interfaces add the cheapest possible microphone preamplifier as an afterthought to the interface. PreSonus knows that the preamplifier is a key component in the sonic quality of a recording. The job of a microphone preamplifier is to boost microphone level signals to line level so that the signal can be converted from analog to digital. This mic to line boost is generally a preamplification of over 400 times the voltage of the original mic level signal. This preamplification stage is one of the most important stages that the signal will go through before converted to digital, and is why a high performance preamplifier is important to achieving great results. A cheap "off the shelf op-amp" type mic preamp that is found in most interfaces translates into thin, noisy and harsh results.

All XMAX preamplifiers are built with the same three elements:

High Voltage - The XMAX preamplifier runs on power rails of 30V. Most off the shelf op amp based designs run on power rails of 10V to 18V. Higher voltage power rails deliver more headroom, deeper lows, smoother highs and an overall fuller sound.

Discrete - No op amps. Only transistors, resistors and capacitors. Op amps add noise, coloration and harshness to a signal. Discrete designs deliver ultra low noise and transparency.

Class A - When a circuit is running in Class A mode the circuit is always in an "on" state operating at its optimal voltage requirements. Class A mode has zero crossover distortion and delivers purer, clearer and more musical sonics than class A/B designs which are found in most op-amp circuits.

The net result of the XMAX preamp design is high headroom, low noise, wide dynamic range and wide frequency range, and most importantly, musicality and transparency - smooth highs, solid deep lows, and everything in between.

Digital Converters and JetPLL Sync

The FireStudio Project touts A/D/A converters with a dynamic range of over 114dB for unbelievable clarity as well as synchronization using patented JetPLL™ jitter reduction technology. JetPLL™ incorporates noise shaping to virtually remove all audio band jitter. JetPLL™ ensures the highest converter performance possible, resulting in better stereo separation and clearer more transparent audio. JetPLL™ delivers ultra-fast locking to any digital format through a wide range of frequencies and is extremely robust and tolerant of wide variations in clock frequencies. JetPLL™ ensures near perfect clock performance when networking audio devices, thus creating the most stable and robust synchronization to the computer.

Universal Control

All members of the FireStudio family of interfaces, including the StudioLive 16.4.2 mixer, come bundled with Universal Control software. Universal Control is a powerful, flexible, and easy to use control-panel application that allows you to daisy-chain to up to 4 FireStudio-family devices for a maximum of up to 52 inputs and outputs.

Universal Control consists of the Launch window and the Device window. In the Launch window, you can set the sample rate, clock source, safe mode, buffer size (PC only), and WDM routing (PC only) for all connected FireStudio-series interfaces. Each device is listed at the bottom of the window, along with Device Window buttons that open each interface’s Device window.

The Device window provides level and routing controls for each FireStudio-series interface’s internal mixer, enabling you to set up zero-latency monitor mixes. Input and output metering have been optimized for ultra-fast screen display and minimum CPU usage, and you can give each interface a custom name. You can use any device in the chain as the master clock source, or you can slave the entire chain to an external digital device using any of the available digital inputs in the chain.

Focusrite's Guitar FX Plug-in Suite includes eleven professional VST/AU plug-ins ideal for the guitarist who does computer recording. The software includes five popular guitar amp models and four distortion pedal effects courtesy of Italian software company Overloud who are experts in the field of accurate guitar amp modeling. A 'hot tuna' guitar tuner and 'smart' hum remover are also provided. The amp models include plug-ins based on the Vox AC30, Marshall JCM900, Fender Twin, MESA Boogie Rectifier, and Fender Bassman. The pedal models include plug-ins based on the Boss DS-1, Ibanez Tube Screamer, Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, Dunlop's Fuzz Face. The amp and pedal models use Overloud's renowned analog-modeling technology, which faithfully reproduces every detail of an analog tone. It also ensures perfect reproduction of parameter behavior, so you always feel like you're controlling the real hardware. Thanks to Overloud's expertise, each component of the schematic has its own mathematical model. After this rather raw scientific step, the resulting tone is fine-tuned by ear. Unlike many modeling companies, Overloud doesn't use the more standard DSP techniques to obtain a tone that only vaguely resembles the original one. Instead, they use incorporate custom developed DSP techniques so their plug-in software reproduces every detail of the original tone. Finally, each Guitar FX Suite plug-in provides a host of initial presets, providing a number of great tones for you to audition immediately. You can also save and recall custom presets, building a vast library of your own customized tones over time.

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2 In/2 Out USB Recording Audio Interface

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2 In/2 Out USB Recording Audio Interface Review

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2 In/2 Out USB Recording Audio Interface Feature

  • High Quality Mic Preamps
  • Excellent Digital Performance
  • Rugged Metal Unibody Case
  • Truly Portable Interface
  • Included Software - DAW and Effects
The Scarlett 2i2 is a 2 in/2 out USB recording interface featuring two award-winning Focusrite preamps. Housed in an attractive anodised aluminium unibody chassis, the interface not only sounds fantastic but looks great too. What’s more it’s solid enough to take on the road when you travel. For more than 25 years, Focusrite has designed some of the most popular microphone preamps in the industry. This experience has been used to create the transparent, low-noise and low-distortion preamp found not only in the Scarlett 2i2 but also our flagship Firewire interface, the Liquid Saffire 56. Plenty of available headroom makes it suitable for moving coil, condenser and ribbon microphones regardless of the source. Phantom power is provided for mics that need it. The front panel Neutrik combination input can be used to connect line and instrument level signals as well as microphones. This makes it perfect for recording the output of a synthesizer or stage piano, whilst at the flick of a switch you can cater for the output of an electric or acoustic guitar. Unique halo signal indicators let you know that you've got a good signal level for recording. Red means that your signal is clipping, and that you should reduce the gain. The halo will momentarily turn amber as the level returns to a healthy level, at which point it will turn green. A large monitor dial provides a tactile control for the volume of your speakers, whilst a high quality headphone amp provides a clean yet loud signal to headphones connected to the front panel socket. The direct monitor switch routes audio directly from the inputs to both the headphone and speaker outputs. This allows you to monitor the incoming signal with zero-latency. The included Scarlett Plug-In suite provides effects compatible with all major DAWs; so whether you're using GarageBand, Pro Tools 9, Cubase, Logic or the included Ableton Live Lite, Scarlett 2i2 is the complete package for you to get recording straight away.
